How To Dress For Divorce Court

Written by Steven J. Kaplan, Esq. | November 19, 2013

I believe it is crucial to teach my clients the importance of dressing appropriately for divorce court.

Now, the word "appropriately" is appropriately different, depending upon who you are.

For example: if you normally wear jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt to work and to social events, it might not be appropriate for you to dress for divorce court by wearing a black suit, white shirt, and black tie. It might seem insincere, and just not who you are.

However, if you are going to wear a suit to court, do it all the way.

I say this because recently, I had two occasions in which I recommended to male clients that they wear a suit to court. Technically, they both followed my instructions: they both wore a suit to court.

However, one client wore no belt ("You didn't say that I had to wear a belt too!").

The other client wore a suit, a belt, and black shoes, but he also wore white socks (sweat socks!) with his black shoes ("You didn't say that I couldn't wear white socks!").

It is appropriate to dress nicely in court.

It is not appropriate to become someone who you are not.

I just have to be more articulate in the future and tell them exactly what to wear with their suit:  A belt.

And dark socks.
