Steven J. Kaplan, Esq.
Don't Let A Toxic Divorce Crush You.
My passion is trying to help people avoid getting put through the wringer of a divorce trial (as discussed on my home page HERE).
That passion was a big part of the reason that I went to law school in the first place.
I grew up in Livingston, New Jersey in the 1950's and 60's, a time when divorce was unheard of.
Then, in the 1970's, many of my friends' parents started getting divorced.
The concept scared the hell out of me.
In NY City in the early 1980's studying to become a divorce lawyer, I had a specific vision in my head of my future divorce law practice.
I imagined my law office on a large body of water.
There was a sailboat tied

to a dock in the backyard.
And if I had a particularly stressful case, I imagined taking a quick sailing break to calmly think through the situation.
No shouting.
No chaos.
Just wind, water, and perspective.
A chance to slow things down and think clearly before making important decisions.
Well, in real life that vision has guided my work for more than four decades.
I now have over 37 years of experience handling complex, high-conflict divorces.
And this has become my "mantra" :
Divorce by the Yard is Hard. But Divorce by the Inch is a Cinch! (well, sort of.)
While divorce is never easy, there are things that one can do to make it easier. MUCH EASIER.
I focus exclusively on divorce and family law, and I have seen what happens when smart people make emotional decisions under pressure.
My role is to bring calm, clarity, and strategy to moments when emotions run high and the stakes are enormous.
Clients often come to me feeling panicked or betrayed.
My job is not to inflame that feeling.
It is to steady it.
To help my client understand the options, anticipate consequences, and move forward thoughtfully rather than reactively.
Divorce is rarely improved by rushing.
It is improved by planning.
Over the years, I have represented professionals, business owners, and parents facing difficult circumstances, including infidelity, power imbalances, high conflict, and long-term financial implications.
I believe that a well-handled divorce is not about winning.
Rather, it is about ensuring that fairness applies.
It is about protecting your future, your finances, and your relationship with your children.
That belief is what led me to create Divorce Smarter, a free educational course designed to help people slow down, understand the process, and avoid costly mistakes before they happen.
I still believe in that original law school vision.
Steady hands.
Clear thinking.
And a calmer path through a storm.
Not every problem can be solved on the water, but the mindset matters.
Focus.
Perspective.
And making decisions you will not regret later.
