Divorces Related To the 9/11 Tragedy

As we approach tomorrow, the 20th anniversary of the horrific 9/11 attacks, I can’t help but think back on the many people who have consulted with me over the past 20 years about getting a divorce as a direct result of what happened to them personally on 9/11.

I’ve consulted with many people.

The following come to mind:

1. A lot of people who were too psychologically scarred to return to work in  NY, quit their jobs, and then their marriages fell apart.

2. Others who returned to work despite their psychological injuries whose marriages also fell apart.

3. A NYC Sanitation worker who had to go in the next day and start picking up papers off the street

4. A commuter bus driver who turned his bus around halfway through Staten Island

5. A guy on a ferry looking back at the falling towers

6. This one’s a little more indirect but an Airline employee who predicted that it would happen 2 months in advance and who was creating a fortress in her basement and whose husband thought she was crazy and so filed for a divorce.

The events of September 11, 2001 didn’t just kill people.

They also killed marriages.
