Should You File For Divorce in NJ Based Upon Extreme Cruelty?

In New Jersey, extreme cruelty is one of 9 recognized grounds for divorce.

This could refer to physical or emotional abuse that puts a spouse in danger or causes them to feel unsafe in their own home.

To file for divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty, you'll need to provide specific details about the  alleged abusive behavior.

This can include incidents of physical violence, verbal abuse, emotional manipulation, and controlling behavior.

It's useful to be as specific as possible when describing the behavior.

In New Jersey, extreme cruelty allegations rarely impact the divorce settlement.

That is why most people are choosing to file for divorce based upon the no-fault ground of "Irreconcilable Differences".
